Les Aveugles

Les Aveugles by Maurice Maeterlinck tells the story of a group of blind asylum patients who are left abandoned in the woods after the priest who was guiding them suddenly disappears. Inspired by the idea of dramatic irony between what is described by the characters and what is seen on stage, below is a proposed set for a dystopian retelling of the classic play. This set is scaled for the Marylin I. Walker theatre at Brock University.

Standing just under 20 feet tall, the mixture of scaffolding and flats creates the illusion of what would have once been a grand city. Designed to emulate the way that skyscrapers reflect light, the flats were created to be illuminate from behind the flats giving a context to the time of day. Meanwhile the scaffolding creates the opportunity for beautiful shadows.

The Once-over

Inspiration by the poem The Once-Over by Paul Blackburn this maquette depicts the contradicting nature of societal influence. Designed based on the interior of a subway car, the two tiered set breaks the rules of realism in an attempt to create a obvious foregrounding of modern advertisement.

Waiting Time

Based off the St. Catharine’s Bus Terminal this piece was inspired by my experience with sudden illness. By embracing elements of surrealism this set became a physical representation of what it feels like to wait for care under the Canadian medical system.

Prometeus' creation

This project was a challenge from our professor to first design a character based off an element, and then to take that character and transform them into a chair. I chose the element of earth.
